Subs in tourney play
By: synwave7It's pretty confusing. I had to read the rules both little green book and tournemant rules several times. In fact I have been walking around with them the last 2 weeks just about everywhere I go. You can sub for your starter once he bats basically.
Let's say you start game on defense (your Home). Your in field 1st so your starter plays defense (3 outs) then on offense (bottom of 1) he bats. You can then bring in his sub going into top of 2.
Let's say on while your on offense however (bottom of 1) you only batted 5 batters and your starter is 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th in lineup. Well, you would have to let starter go back in on defense for top of 2. Then lets say you go 3 up 3 down in bottom of 2. You guessed it, for our scenario your starter is number 9.
So, your starter has to go back out for top of 3. He leads off for bottom of 3 now your sub can go out for top of 4 and hope to (GOD - whatever higher power you use) that you bat around or at least to bottom of order in bottom of 4 and hope to HIM you don't 10 run the other team.
This is of course worst case scenerio. We played our first game last night and batted around by bottom of 2 so in top of 3 (we were home) our subs went out. Whatever players (by the way as you know you only bat 9) are subs you have to pick ahead of time who they will sub for and kinda tandem these kids the whole game. At least this the easiest way we found to do these subs.
You can think of the tourney rules much like MLB rules. The MLB manager usually (always exceptions) has a predetermined spot for the subs. Why confuse the issue with putting in the sub for more than one person. Our philosaphy is that we only have 12 players. They are all pretty much playing tha same position some play 2. The "subs" play LF, 1st and catcher respectively.
Once both starter and sub play 3 def outs and bat 1nce it's free substitution. You can sub back and forth all game. Don't forget your sub and there starter cannot be in the lineup at the same time. This is why we did the tandem thing.
We pinch ran 2wice last night also. Both times the runner scored.

10. SUBSTITUTIONS/RE-ENTRY: This tournament rule replaces regular season Rule
3.03 (re-entry) for all levels of tournament play.
b. Any player who has been removed for a substitute may re-enter the game in the SAME position in the batting order, provided:
1. the player being removed has played defensively for a minimum of three (3) consecutive defensive outs, and;
2. the player being removed has completed one time at bat during the game.
NOTE 1: See the definitions in Rule 9-e above on complying with this rule defensively and offensively.
NOTE 2: A player who has met the above requirements, and is a pitcher at the time he/she is removed, may be removed for a substitute batter and re-enter the game as a pitcher once, provided the pitcher was not physically replaced on the mound.
c. A starter and his/her substitute must not be in the lineup at the same time, except as provided in Rule 10-a.
d. Improper substitution is a basis for protest. Protests involving improper substitution not resolved before the next pitch or play shall not be considered.
Hope this helps!
