LONG TOSS USELESS FOR PITCHERS?

By: THE COACH

In the most recent issue of Collegiate Baseball, Dick Mills, in a very long article, debunks the idea that 'long toss' will benefit pitchers. Now understand, I consider Mills to be a charlatin but it is hard to refute his thesis.

"If pitching success has a great deal to do with building a quality delivery and to consistently deliver the ball with maximum command, why would we what to teach a pitcher a completely different movement skill that emphasizes throwing using a crow hop and releasing the ball with an elevated trajectory and arm position to a target that cannot possibly be hit with accuracy and meaning?"

" So a pitchers ultimate velocity will be dependent on how quickly and explosively he can move his body- not only by efficient transfer of his total body weight into landing but how quickly he can transfer that energy into rotational forces that bring the arm through to release the ball."

" If a pitcher's arm worked independently in the delivery, then focusing on getting it to go faster by itself might make sense."

Talk among yourselves.

BTW, if you do not read Collegiate Baseball, you can not call yourself a serious baseball man. ( no and it is not available at TIPS FROM THE COACH.COM)
